The Family Fitness Challenge
I recently read that this generation of kids will not outlive their parents. Wow. This is incredibly sad. With all the awareness that surrounds us of how important fitness and healthy foods are, we still manage to tip the scales continuously. And not in a good way!
If you're a parent and want to do something today to help prevent your kids from being a statistic of an early death, why not create a family fitness challenge. Basically what this means is that you will be creating fun and interactive fitness workouts you can all enjoy. Depending on the time of year could affect what you do. Gearing up for winter, why not try out a winter sport such as skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing? Or something even more simple, tobogganing! Climbing up hills is an excellent cardio workout, not to mention super fun sliding down them! Even hopping into an indoor community pool for a game of Marco/Polo or doing laps is a fun and fit way of getting exercise for the whole family.
Keep in mind that designing your fitness training schedule could be a bit challenging. We all opposite schedules so it can be tricky finding a date and time that agrees with all parties. But if your family is really committed to making a change, you must try and book 1-3x activities a week. Nowadays you don't even have to leave the comfort of your home to get active. Wii has come up with a great selection of fitness related programs and games. Depending on the size of your family room, you could very well just stick on a workout DVD and follow a program together. So many options!
The fitness challenge you design has to be something you all enjoy doing. Not to mention, it's a "challenge" so why not add an element of competition to it. Such as, the person that loses the most weight or the person who is able to do the most sit-ups or pushups is rewarded! The more fun you make it, the greater chance you'll be able to stick to it.
Keep a journal or even a white board on hand so you can all track your progress on your fitness challenge and record the activities you enjoy doing the most on your fitness training schedule so you can repeat them again. To increase your results, make sure you add a healthy foods component. Fitness is only one aspect of living a healthier life.
